The Department of Commerce started functioning from the year 1973 with the Pre-University Course. Mr. V.Sankarasubramoniam was the first to join the Department. Later B.Com Degree course was started in the year 1975. Mr. N.Sasidharan Nair who was working in the N.S.S College Kottayam, joined the Department as the first Professor and Head.

Realising the importance of commerce education, the members of the Management Committee made efforts to start M.Com Degree Course. As a result, M.Com Degree course was introduced during the year 1984 when Mr. V.P.Sambasivan was the Principal.

With a view to inculcating managerial and administrative ability in the workers of Madura Coats, a leading Textile Industry in Tamilnadu, Diploma Course in Business Administration was conducted in the year 1980. The Post-Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations was started in the year 1983, to cater to the needs of the Executives of Madura Coats Limited, Ambasamudram.

For sowing the seeds of self-employment talents in the minds of commerce students, Vocationalisation of Commerce education was introduced by availing of the UGC Scheme. In Vocationalisation, subjects like Income tax, Sales Tax, Central Excise and Customs Duty were taught to the students.

The Department has set a brilliant record of producing University ranks at UG and PG levels.

Former Principal and Head of the Department of Commerce Dr. N.Sasidharan Nair has contributed much for the development of Commerce education in this College. During his tenure a State-Level Seminar on “Project Evaluation and Guidance” was conducted. Many personalities like Dr.S.Ramachandran (Former Dean of College Development Council, Madurai Kamaraj University), Dr.N.Thanulingam (Former Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, Madurai Kamaraj University ), Dr. A.Rengasamy ( Head, PG Department of Commerce, V.O.C. College, Tuticorin) and Dr. S.Rajamani (Head, Department of Commerce , Sri Parama Kalyani College , Alwarkurichi) gave lectures on various topics.

Dr.V.Sankarasubramoniam took charge as Head of the Department in the year 2001. During his tenure many Commerce Scholars like Dr. T.Aranganathan (Professor of Commerce, Directorate of Distance Education, Annamalai University), Prof.K.Sundararajan (Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce M.D.T.Hindu College, Tirunelveli), and Dr.V.Krishnan, (Head of the Department of Commerce, S.T.Hindu College, Nagercoil) delivered lectures on various subjects.

The present Head Dr. K. Murugan Chettiar has been organising weekly meetings and Association meetings at the PG and UG levels by inviting personalities like Dr.S.M.Ckockalingam, Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, Annamalai University , and Dr.G.Rajaram, Director of Distance Education, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.

During the years 2002 and 2003, students of our Department brought out hand-written books, entitled “Udaya 2002” and “Udaya 2003” containing current affairs and topics of General Knowledge for the benefit of the student community.

The Department has been motivating the students to appear for the competitive examinations like BSRB, RRB and SSC.

It is a credit to the Department of Commerce that Dr. S.Ramachandran was given the Tamilnadu State-Level Best N.S.S Programme Officer Award for the year 1998-1999 Mr.T.Chidhambaranatha Pillai was given the Best Secretary Award by the Lions Clubs International for the year 1998-99 . Dr.S.Sudalaiyandi was given the Best Rotary Secretary Award by the Rotary International ( District 3210), for the year 2000-01.

Mr.S.Subbaraju served as a Block Co-ordinator of the Total Literacy Campaign sponsored by the Government of Tamilnadu, during 1992-93.
