Department of Mathematics

To create Computer awareness, the Department selected Computer Science as one of the optional papers. Mr. M.Murugalingam was the first to teach computer science in our College. He attended the computer training given by the University. Then, the Department selected Computer Science as one of the ancillary subjects; thereby Mathematics students studied four computer papers with University Practical Examinations.
With a view to giving computer education to outsiders, the Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Computer Applications was started in 1992. Mr.R.Murugesan, faculty of Mathematics Department handled the classes.
Mrs. U.Vijayalakshmi studied PGDCA in our College. Mr.M.Murugalingam and Mrs. S. Palaniammal Studied PGDCA through Correspondence Course. After getting PGDCA qualification, the staff members of Maths Department handled PGDCA classes.
Mr.S.Radhakrishnan retired on 31st December 2003. As the next member, Mr.M.Murugalingam, was doing research under FIP; Mrs.S.Palaniammal took charge as Head of the Department. During her period she stimulated the activities of Mathematics Association. She arranged lectures by different personalities like Dr.S.Somasundaram, Reader in Mathematics, M.S.University, and Dr.S.Thamaraiselvi, Professor and Head, Department of Information Technology, M.I.T., Anna University , Chennai. During her period the staff members gave training to the students in attending Maths Quiz Programmes. As a result, our College students won the Second Prize in the University-Level Maths Quiz Contest conducted by M.S.University, Tirunelveli.
Mr.M.Murugalingam took charge as the Head of the Department in March 2004. He has been organising various association meetings by inviting personalities like Dr.Tamilselvam, Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, M.S.University, Tirunelveli, and Mr.S.Sundaram, Head of the Department of Mathematics, S.P.K. College, Alwarkurichi. He organised other meetings to create awareness in Natural Medicine and Computer Hardware Training.
It is a matter of pride to the Department of Mathematics that Mr.M.Murugalingam has worked as a Faculty member in the Teachers’ Orientation Programme, conducted by the Education Department for the Maths Teachers of Cheranmahadevi Educational District.
As a result he was given the opportunity of conducting the Workshop on “Teaching Mathematics” in the new syllabus for P.G. Teachers. Mrs.S.Palaniammal was given the Best NSS Programme Officer Award by the M.S.University for the year 2002-03. Mrs. U.Vijayalakshmi was the convener of PGDCA for a period of six years. Mr.R.Murugesan submitted his Ph.D.Thesis to M.S.University, Tirunelveli, in 2003 and is awaiting the result.
