About Department

Tamil, the “Classical Language” is the mother tongue of the vast majority of the people of Tamilnadu. Our College was started as a Senthamil College in July 1968 with the interest to develop Tamil Studies. Our College is situated on the banks of the river Tamirabharani at the foothills of Mount Pothigai Mount Pothigai is related to the Holy Saint Agasthiya, who made the oldest Tamil Grammar text “Agathiyam”.
first, Pre-University Course in Tamil medium was started. In the year 1971, B.A. Tamil Major was introduced. The Course attracted many students in and around Vickramasingapuram.
Scholars and Academicians have contributed their services to the Department so far. Dr.K.P.Aravanan, who had been a member of our Department and the Principal of our College from 16.6.1968 to 18.6.1969, held the Office of the Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in later years. His better-half Dr.A. Thayammal Aravanan, who is now working as the Head of the Department of Tamil, Mother Therasa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, also served our Department in the year 1968-69.

Among them, Dr.S.Jawaharlal was “ Porkizhi” award for his poetry works.

From the academic year 2004-05, Mr.B.Valsakumar is the Head of the Department. Mr.S.Sivasankar, Mrs.G.Vijaya, Mr.A. Packiamuthu and Dr.M.S.Sree Jeyanthi, Selvi.R.Varalakshmi are working in the Department.

Tamil Department has its own library consisting of about 750 books.Journalism being a subject in the curriculum, the Department is encouraging the students to publish a handwritten magazine. The magazine consists of the contributions and the creativity of the students. As a result, during the year 1984, the Department brought out the magazine “Pournami”(Full Moon). Later the title of the magazine has been changed as “Nilamutram”. It attracts all the students in this area. Every year, the Department is keen on publishing this magazine.

For gaining practical knowledge in the field of journalism, the Department is arranging press visits to the Dailies like, “The New Indian Express”, “Dinamalar”, “Daily Thanthi”, “Dinakaran” and “Tamil Murasu” every year. During the visit, the students are imparted knowledge of editing, printing, news layout, advertisements, etc. by the experts available, in the Newspaper offices.
R.P.Sethu Pillai Tamil Association has been functioning since 1984. Many Tamil Scholars like Dr.S.V. Subramaniam, World Tamil Research Centre, the EPRLF Leader Mr.Ezhavendan, Dr. Valanarasu, Former HOD of Tamil St.Johns’ College, Palayamkottai, gave lectures on different topics.

Our student Selvi.M.Bysoolrani took part in “Arattai Arangam”(Gossip Forum) of SUN TV. She won various prizes at the State, University and District levels.
Weak students are identified and special coaching is given in their respective subjects, they are monitored by the faculty members.
Many of our students got placement in the offices of the Dailies like “Dinakaran”,“Daily Thanthi” and “Free Lancer”.
