The Department of English came into existence in 1968, when the Pre- University Course was introduced. Most of the students are from rural background and their primary and high school education is normally in Tamil medium. So they find it difficult to read and understand English. To enable them to read and understand English, the Department works as a team with a proper strategy, trains the students to acquire language competence and prepares them for the University Examinations. Revision classes and tests are held regularly for the benefit of the students. The dedication of the teachers is becoming fruitful and it reflects in the gradual improvement of the results in the University examinations.

The Department encourages students in other literary activities like elocution, essay writing, short story writing, poem composing, debating and quiz, which help them improve their language skills.

The Department takes the initiative of identifying disadvantaged students mostly of rural background or first generation learners or from the depressed sections of the society such as scheduled castes, backward classes and most backward classes or regional medium students. We conduct a “Bridge Course” to make such students’ entry into College life smooth and pleasing. Additionally, students unable to catch up with the rest, have been administered “Remedial Courses”. Printed study materials are supplied at a nominal cost to the students.

For the failed students the teachers have conducted extra coaching classes to make them pass the University examinations. They have conducted special coaching classes for SC / ST students for their improvement. For such classes the Department has invited Professors like Mr.S.Rajapandian, Former Vice-Principal, St.John’s College, Palayamkottai. Spoken English classes are organised for the students through the English Association of the College.

The faculty members have a deep academic interest and attend various seminars, workshops, orientation courses and refresher courses conducted by the Universities and other institutions.

When our University introduced EDOC system as new curriculum, our Department conducted EDOC classes by handling papers like “English for Competitive Examinations” and “Journalism”, with an eye on job opportunities for the students. In association with the State Institute of English, our Department conducted a five-day State-Level FIP Programme for English Language teachers in Colleges from 18.12.2000 to 22.12.2000.
