Even though the College was started in 1968 for the study of Tamil only, Science subjects were introduced in course of time. Consequently Physics was incorporated as an Ancillary subject under Part III at the undergraduate level for B.Sc. Chemistry (Major) and Mathematics (Major) in the year 1980. Mr. M.Panner was the first Lecturer in Physics who was redeployed from Kamaraj College, Tuticorin. Mr.Raju was the next to join the Department. Presently the Department is functioning with two staff members, Mr.E.Ramachandran and Mr.S.Sundaram. Both are holding M.Phil Degree and Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications. In addition Mr.E.Ramachandran holds Bachelor’s degree in Education and is currently pursuing research for Doctoral Degree.

Mr.N.Jeyakumar, Mr.S.Shanmugasundara Raj and Mr.Jeya Chandran also served during various terms as substitute teachers Under F.I.P. Programme.

The Department is well-equipped with a spacious laboratory and fifty books for reference of the students. The Department library is under development. Further the Department also imparted computer education to humanities students under Extra Disciplinary Optional Course in 2002-03.

Mr. E. Ramachandran has presented 14 research papers in 7 National Seminars/Conferences and two papers in International Conferences held at Hong Kong (AsCA’4) in 2004. He has also attended the Asian Crystallographic Association IV Meeting (AsCA’01) held at IISC, Bangalore, in 2001. He has published 6 research papers in internationally referred journals. This adds remarkable credibility to the Department as well as to the College.
