In just about two hundred years since it emerged as a systematic science, Chemistry has made impressive contributions to human knowledge and civilization. The ingenuity of millions of chemists the world over has brought about an increasingly fundamental understanding of the nature, composition and behaviour of matter. This understanding is not only a source of intellectual satisfaction but it has also contributed directly or indirectly to the silent technological revolutions in agriculture, communication, medicine, metallurgy, public health, textiles, transportation and countless other fields.

Chemistry being closely related to our life, the Department of Chemistry contributes greatly to the human race by enriching the students with knowledge of Chemistry.

In acquiring scientific knowledge, there is a wide gap between rural and urban areas. The feeding area of our College is very backward and majority of the people are living in villages. They are farm labourers, mill workers, coolies and beedi workers. Students from these families are of First Generation. Therefore, our Management decided to impart scientific knowledge in greater extent to the downtrodden people.

With an aim to serve this cause, the Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1979 with the introduction of B.Sc. at UG level with Chemistry as a major subject.
When Sri. A.P.C. Veerabahu, the Educationist from Tuticorin, was the Secretary of this College, Mr.V.Arunachalam, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, was transferred from V.O.C. College, Tuticorin, and he was assigned the work of establishing the Department.

As a jewel in the crown, the Department has Mr.V.Arunachalam as the Head from the inception of the Department in 1979. Under the leadership of Mr.V.Arunachalam, the Chemistry laboratory was designed and fully equipped for the students.

The Department has eminent Faculty, who evince keen interest in educating the students for better placement in society. They update their knowledge periodically and extend their professional skills in reaching out to the needs of the community.

Mr. P.S.Rajasekaran, a product of this Department, is an efficient teacher and is keen on inculcating the knowledge and the role of Chemistry in everyday life among students.

Mr. G.Kasirajan is a committed teacher and is keen on inculcating social awareness and scientific approach among the students.

To reach the basic needs of the community and also to provide job

opportunities to the students, the Department has introduced Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Instrumental Methods and Analysis as optional papers.

Though the Teachers are serving the rural people, they motivate the students to go for Higher Education and appear for GATE or CSIR examinations and avail of the scholarships provided by the Government.

The Department has an impressive record of motivating the students to pursue higher courses. Our students occupy good positions in various reputed institutes and organisations. Most of these students are First Generation Graduates. The Department has got the potential and personnel to grow and is poised for further development.

Mr.K.Kaliappan, twelfth rank holder in B.Sc. (1985-88), took his M.Sc., with First Rank, from the School of Chemistry Madurai Kamaraj University. He was one among the top six rank holders of National-Level CSIR Examination in Chemistry. He did his Ph.D at IISc, Bangalore, and P.D.F. in Geneva and U.S.A. At present he is working as Assistant Professor at I.I.T, Mumbai.

Ms.R.Gowri, passed GATE in 1990. She did her Ph.D at IIT Chennai. At present she is working as Research Scientist, University of MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.

Ms. N.Radha, Second Rank Holder in B.Sc.(1985-88), took her B.Tech. in Aeronautical Engineering from M.I.T, Chennai. Presently she is working as Scientist at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum.

Dr.A. Rajakumar is working as Scientist at National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa.

Ms.V.Geetha, Final Year Student (2000-01) was selected as a Summer Research Fellow with Prof.G.Sundararajan, Department of Chemistry, IIT Chennai, for two months.

Mr.V.Chandrasekaran., M.Sc., M.Tech. is working as Deputy Manager

at National Thermal Power Corporation, Ahmedabad.
